(RL note: I spazzed out on Wednesday, after three days of growing unfocused anxiety, and chickened out in the blood donation screening room. This post does not have to do with that, but I am mentioning it for my personal reference.)

So, the other morning on my walk to work, this was my chain of perceptions and reactions:
P: Flag fluttering, black with white. (Full-size, on a full-height official looking flag pole in the lawn of a private residence.)
R: Pirate flag. Neat.
P: Wait, the shape's wrong.
R: Non-standard pirate flag! Neater! Must see specific design, perhaps x-ref to historical pirate.
P: No... that's a horse. A running horse. There's something above the horse, approximately horizontal. Maybe a spear.
R: WTF. Someone is flying Gondor? Badfan, badfan, Gondor's tree and stars, you mean Rohan. WTF. Someone's flying Rohan and I'm this much of a geek? And it should be a green background. Was there a stylized weapon of some kind on the Rohan standard?
P: Squint at it real hard, wait for the wind to fully extend it. It's a... unicorn. With a shooting star trail overhead and the star at the point of its horn.
R: How disappointingly 6th-grade-girly. It would have been cooler if they were flying Rohan.
Meta-reaction: I outgeek even myself.

I've been pondering for a few months the idea of having a flag pole installed in our front yard, making sure it is at LEAST one foot /taller/ than the fire station's flag poll, so I can fly a UN flag from it. Pulling it all the way to the top, it would fly higher than the US flag next door, which would be very important to me.

... but now you've got me wanting to make it even taller, so there's room to add a second flag below it, which would rotate out: pirate, alien pirate, gondor, rohan, whatever else I can think of that would fit.


Now I have to find somewhere to make me an alien pirate flag.
