If a place name starts with "The" and is used in the middle of a sentence, should "the" be capitalized in that spot? It's very common in bar names. I've tried consulting style guides and can't find it.

Examples:
He should have left them at T/the Prancing Pony, as they were clearly a bunch of food-obsessed tossers.
I'm going to T/the Cuff Friday night, while my girlfriend is having drinks at T/the Wild Rose.
Is T/the Wilde Rover actually queer-friendly, or do they just like putting a picture of Oscar Wilde on their sign?

Clearly the solution is to add a gratuitous the before the proper name of any venue, e.g. the The Cuff. Which is not the same as The The cuff, which is when you shirt sleeves have a built-in mp3 player loaded with only music by Matt Johnson.

I would say that if "The" is an official part of the title, then it gets capitalized with all other words in a title in styles which capitalize title words. If it's not officially part of the title, then I would say probably no capitalization.

You win at comments.

Also, you have correctly ascertained which of these bars prompted my actual style question.

I'd tend to base it on how it's pronounced. Is there stress on the "The" or a pause just beforehand? Can you imagine alphabetizing whatever-it-is under "The ..."? Mostly, for me, the answer seems to be lower case. "The Cuff" actually seems to be one of the borderline ones for me, though. I can totally see myself talking about you going first to The Cuff, and then to the Merc.

There is no universally accepted standard. Unfortunately, every proposed standard is either too radical to gain widespread acceptance across disparate audiences or fails to encompass all the possibilities that one might want to address. Each writer needs to consider the target audience and choose according to what they think will communicate their intent to that audience. Of necessity, this opens the author to disapproval from others with disagreements, or who are simply disagreeable; some people have strong opinions on the subject and will project the strength of those opinions onto their opinion of you. This is normal, but regrettable. Authors must simply take such things in stride and have enough confidence in their work to ignore this kind of, and I use the term loosely, feedback.

Also, I'm pretty sure that it's The Cuff.

Are you sure you're not thinking of ungendered pronouns? :D

R.I.P. Dollar Bill.

I stilll think The Incredibles was a better movie adaptation of Watchmen than Watchmen.

Ridiculous. The Incredibles was clearly the best, by a far, far margins, Fantastic Four movie ever made, and probably that could be made.

If "the" is in the title, yes, capitalize it.
