This guy built a periodic table. And is trying to get a full collection of samples to put in it. A fully documented building history can be found here. It has lots of pictures of tools and a full explanation of his scientific reasoning behind each of the woods he chose.

I found this because he wrote the recent Popular Science article on liquid nitrogen ice cream (no surprises for those who have made it before, but well-written).

randomdreams, xmurf, gfish, and any other tool geeks I'm forgetting at the moment, I think you'd get along with this guy.
