Ode to continuous connectivity
Oct. 7th, 2003 10:45 pmThis job search thing really bites in a single-phone line household populated by talkative women.
So, I was frustrated, and showed it, when Mom asked me to get offline for 15 minutes, immediately after I thought the coast was clear to connect. She thought I was trying to guilt her for "just wanting to have some kind of a relationship and I've arranged one that doesn't have him live in our house." Dear lord, we get dramatic when we're pissy. Can you see her dragging the broken wing?
Sorry, that was beneath us both, and I'll regret posting it in the morning, but dude, that was the third time she'd called him this evening, almost a half hour each call, and I wasn't even complaining about her monopolizing the phone, because she wasn't. I was expressing frustration at this being approximately the sixth interruption to my internet access this evening, when I've commited to putting an hour a day into focused seeking of employment.
And no, I don't work as well or efficiently when that's broken into 15 minute chunks punctuated by waiting around, duration unknown, for someone (including me) to get off the phone, by which point I'm so irritated that it interferes with concentration. Mom says she doesn't grok feeling really interrupted by phone pick-ups, since the browser window stays open, so she can pick up where she left off... which is true to a point, but it feels like I just have time to really start getting some momentum when *BRRIINNNG* someone else has priority, buh-bye, thanks for playing, it might be ten minutes or an hour before the phone is free again.
Note to my Seattle buddies: This does not mean don't call me. I just need to figure out how to settle this on my end. Mom says that if she can warn her man beforehand, she has no problem with my unplugging the Call Interrupt while I'm doing my hour. Even more efficiently, once I have my resume and references settled (I work best on them in my home word processing setup), I think I'll pick up and move all the internet-intensive sections of the process to my dad's house, which has cable modem and almost no one calling for me.
