I'm on day 4 of a very painful spot on the roof of my mouth, in a spot where it's pressed hard every time I spit, swallow, or chew. Yesterday I ate only soft starches and whimpered a lot. One of the lymph nodes on that side is sore, so I'm calling the consulting nurse today, but I think it's just a scratch that got out of hand. I need to buy another bottle of everything-killing mouthwash, and eating pickles feels nice, but has not had much of an effect. Anbesol does not seem to be labeled for use inside the mouth. Sigh.

Here's the best part: my loving partner's advice is to RUB SALT IN THE WOUND. I did so, last night and this morning. Not to abrade it, but just to stick a pile of salt to the area with my thumb and leave it there until I want to scream. The theory is that the healthy cells will be able to take the strain but the bothersome cells will die off, discouraging infection and toughening up the area.

Ow, ow, ow. Pain sucks.

Grad school rules, though. I got into Nancy Pearl's class after all. (Hear me squeeing.)

Cloraseptic can be used inside the mouth, though.

Sympathies.

I recommend Biotene - it's alcohol free, antibacterial, and won't set your mouth on fire. I used it the second time I got my tongue pierced, and it healed in half the time as the first (for which I used Listerine).

Nyuk nyuk nyuk.

Get well soon. I don't suppose I'll see you at Cedars on the 15th, will I?

Pepto-Bismol

Remember the exciting thanksgiving when my mouth tried to digest itself? The thing that worked was swishing "Magic Mouthwash" I got by prescription, but the pharmacist said it was made of basic OTC ingredients. I can tell you for certain one of them was Pepto-Bismol. I don't know if swishing just Pepto and Listerine will help or not but it might not be as painful.

I vote for the antiseptic qualities of pickle juice (vinegar/salt, both good and tasty germ killers) mouth rinses over the straight pile of salt, tho all that pain feels like it ought to be doing SOMEthing.

YAYAYAYAYAYAA Nancy Pearl. Linda R. applauds.

And yes, Chloroseptic leaves it dead but kills not germs. Clean does help the body fight -- change toothbrushes or sanitize your fancy buzzy one, and mouthwash good but painful ones aren't necessarly better than the others . . .

I have never heard of actually rubbing salt directly in, but rinsing for a few minutes with warm salt water is a long-standing remedy for many inside-the-mouth ailments that really really works. I find it not only makes canker sores go away quicker, it also makes them hurt less, at least on me.

L-Lysine (in tablet form) is also good for such things; it's what's in Milk of Magnesia, which is why Fishy used to take the tablet variety of that for cold sores. I imagine that's probably also why pepto was an ingredient in someone else's remedy.

Squee! Nancy Pearl!

I always rub toothpaste on such things myself. Not brush them but just daub a giant glop of it on there.... Sometimes it helps.
