gementTo those of you whom I anti-recommend violent movies: Do not see this one. This is not gadget-Bond, and I was startled this morning to learn that this movie somehow snuck by with a PG-13. I suppose they managed it by minimizing the gore, swearing and nudity, so they poured it all into shockingly visceral violence.
To those of you who enjoyed reading Fleming's books or like your spies more Le Carre, this is was a blast to go see. It's long and twisty, (which got it dinged by some reviewers who apparently felt that something should blow up every five seconds to avoid character development) giving me leisure to enjoy a decently-written script. Bond is raw, unbalanced, and not yet fully in control of his powers, which is pretty interesting.
There's a parkour running sequence through a construction yard that was quite fun. The fight scenes are... well, as realistic as fight scenes get in movies, and quite visceral. Note to CBT fans: this is your movie. Note to CBT squickers: this is not your movie. Note to those of you about to google "CBT" to find out what I mean: Don't. Just don't. Trust me.
I'd post about other stuff, but this quarter's just been quite difficult and I was inspired to post today. Later, I may be inspired to tell you about RocketLad, the 4th grader I'm accellerating in math. He's astounding, and a marvel to work with.
My group projects are proceeding apace. In research class we've got surveys out to our sample of grade school teachers and the big crunch of data collection lies ahead. In the group for the History of Magical Books class group I keep accidentally biting off more than I can chew, but I'm trying to scale back and the group is finally starting to work together smoothly.
I've lost all respect for the teacher in my technology class, but I'm actually getting on better with Professor Binns, the History of Magical Books lecturer with whom I started the quarter pretty miserable. Oh! And I haven't told you about Lydia! Lydia's my favorite lecturer this quarter, who summed herself up nicely on the first day of class:
"I'm the only black woman you'll have ever met who used to play accordian Flight of the Bumblebee at polish weddings!"
She, is, needless to say, a hoot.
If I'd been posting all along, you'd have some idea of what any of this meant!
