You probably haven't paid attention to the Advisory Board elections. I don't blame you. But I would appreciate it if you would jump on the bandwagon and vote, because there are some philosophical issues of who the users send to the table. If you haven't been following along:
The short form:
The LJ administration is asking LJ users to elect one user to a position on the advisory board. This person would not have decision-making power. This person would, however, be representing the userbase to the administration. If we send a joker, they'll see us as jokers. If we send someone communicative, they'll see us as communicative.
Here's who's running: Advisory Board Candidates. Here's where to vote: LJ Election Post.
If you haven't already been following, you don't want to look through all that. You want me to sum up. As the dust is settling, there are five candidates with any chance, two of those with a good chance.
rm is my favorite. Official position post. In her nomination post, she gave the most articulate and business-sensitive explanations of how it's in LJ's interests to stick with the letter of the law on user speech issues instead of playing nanny. She cares about the historical mistakes LJ has made, but in the sense of "This is the goodwill you still need to rebuild with the community," not, "WAUGH!"
She is a professional writer as well as a fanfic writer, and displays a wide range of interests in her public LJ entries. So. I'd be happiest if she were representing us. She's currently in third place, but has a LOT of 2nd-choice votes, which gives her a chance.
legomymalfoy is the current frontrunner for first-choice votes. Official position post. Nomination post. She's a Support volunteer and former Abuse Team member. She seems sane. She has a lot of fan communities backing her, and is a little more fan-focused that I'm thrilled with, but that's clearly not all that's going on with her. I strongly recommend casting at least a 3rd-choice vote for her, as the race is most likely to end with a contest between her and Jameth, described next.
jameth is the second-runner, with a slim lead on total votes (1st+2nd+3rd). Official position post (actually all posts under his campaign tag). Nomination Post.
I cannot support Jameth. I have seen a trail of drama everywhere he goes and everywhere his name is mentioned. He does not discourage people from speaking abusively on his behalf. Many of the campaign banners supporting him are deliberately offensive and NSFW.
RM banned Jameth from her journal long in the past; he interprets the fact that she did not unban him so he could debate her in her personal journal as censorship, and his supporters chew all over her accordingly. It's really painful to read. They complain that they've been banned, blocked and deleted in a number of places. I've seen their behavior. I am neither surprised nor sympathetic.
He apparently works in San Francisco City Hall and is a longtime political activist, but he did not communicate this or any actual positions in his nomination post, leaving any explanations for the day voting opened... And then he took offense when people described him as a joke candidate in the interim, given only a journal full of LOLcats to judge by. While he may be effective and personable in person, anyone with that cloud of drama around him makes me very nervous. I am not impressed with the company he keeps, and he makes no attempt to disassociate himself from its ickiness.
[Note: My friend Cow is supporting him, and I mean no disrespect to Cow in this. Cow is a nice person who behaves very well.]
vichan is along legomymalfoy's lines, but with less LJ management experience. She does have real-world managerial experience, but her writing style does not smack of amazing rhetoric and she's very strongly fan-focused. She'd probably be okay, but she's also unlikely to surmount the gap in votes at this point. I'd prefer her to Jameth. Official Position Post. Nomination Post.
squeaky19 runs a competing site on the same code, InsaneJournal. He's championing open source. While I think interoperability is neat, I don't know if it actually supports more users using LiveJournal, at which point the administration is really not gonna be interested. In a quick look-round, I couldn't find his policy on content restrictions, but he's old-school, which generally goes with the "legal limits only" stance. If you prefer to vote for someone entirely non-fannish who's not Jameth, he's your best option. Official Position Post. Nomination Post.
Whoever you vote for, please remember that voting 1st+2nd+3rd for the same person is just throwing away two preferences. An informative illustration made by

The very short form:
My suggested ticket is
rm for first choice, followed by
legomymalfoy for second and
vichan/
squeaky19 for third. I recommend strongly against voting for Jameth. I would appreciate it if you would go to the LJ Election Post and vote.
Voting closes on Thursday, so please vote right now before you forget. If you think you know who you want based on my descriptions but want to read up later, please cast preliminary votes now, before you forget; you can change them later at this link. Thank you.
