I hung 40 Halloween PSA fliers on Saturday, doing a pretty good job on Cap Hill. (A stroll on Sunday confirmed that a few of them even survived howling rain and passers-by!) This despite what [livejournal.com profile] arjache described as a Dickensian cough. I now own a staple hammer! I love my staple hammer.

Dickensian cough still going strong. It's been my only symptom (other than a couple days' exhaustion) since Wednesday.

There was a SLUG ON THE WALL the other night, in my house, 4" long, 4' up, right next to the bathroom door. I confess, I screamed. I was raised in a desert and have never quite gotten used to the wet side of the state's proliferation of slugs and snails. IN THE HOUSE! FOUR INCH SLUG! Jason took it outside for me.

A few weeks ago I had a couple really nasty bouts of insomnia, which sucked, but led to my reading two books! I read depressingly little, so that was nice. Even better, I enjoyed both immensely.
  • The Historian I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who kind of feels like reading Dracula again except you've read it already. The tone and echoing is brilliant, with added depth since it's building on a century of vampire fandom. It feels old-school.
  • Almost Perfect, yes, the Torchwood franchise novel, was ridiculously fun. I can even back-justify the ridiculous clothing choices Ianto made, and it was refreshing to read a story with a gay club as a major setting that didn't feel like it was written by a tourist. (They kind of turned queering the villain inside-out.)
I'm a week behind on work, but I'm out of my drop-dead probation review so it's not a crisis. Yay!

I was wondering about those fliers. Glad to see they're up! I hope they're having an effect.

Slugs. Ew. I have the same reaction. I can't stand them!

Yeah, took me long enough. I can't believe I went to that workshop not knowing who she was. *headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk*

I'm wholeheartedly glad I went too. I need to get the hang of this "leaving my comfort zone" thing to actually come see you sometime.

That would be nice. I'd also be happy to meet you somewhere closer to your comfort zone for coffee/tea.

I grew up in the midwest where slugs actually happen and they still wig me out.

No slugs were harmed in the production of this amusing story. Jason used the Spider Transfer Unit (an old toothpaste tube box) to escort it outside.

Considering what I do to slugs, sometimes, it's not like I could complain.

Seriously... *UGH*

"IN THE HOUSE! FOUR INCH SLUG!"

That was one of the things that took some serious getting used to when I first moved up here, though the only place I lived that I found them in the house was the wierd little house I was in when I lived slightly south of Seattle. That house was over 100 years old and wasn't being properly maintained by the landlord, so there were all kinds of places the critters could get in, mostly via gaps in the sub-floor. I'd find them on the walls and the actual stairs the led up to the bedrooms all the time... I think the grossest thing I've ever experienced is the unexpected squish of a slug gooshed between the toes.

PS: Is it possible to be in touch with you sometime? I'd still like to talk about the whole scintillatingly confusing admissions process for UW, qand get your recommendations on how to proceed... 8)

I am grateful that this is the only slug (touch wood) I've seen indoors in 5 years of this residence.

I think that a really awesome cool person could scream at slugs.

Anyone who feels like rereading Dracula should totally read Fred Saberhagen's The Dracula Files.

I read that (or if it's a series, the first one), and the Holmes crossover he also did. It was a great read. In contrast, The Historian was... I don't know how to put it. More classical, I suppose. And of course it's about historian, which means academiporn.

The Dracula Files is a combined reprint of The Dracula Tape and The Holmes-Dracula File. I don't think they're available separately anymore. There are also several other Saberhagen Dracula books, but that/those is/are the best.
