After several attempts to find things Netflix doesn't have (I'll have to look for The 4400 and V separately), and some tasty tasty Futurama, it was J's turn to choose again. His preferred sick-time TV is schlock horror. This week, that's in the form of Supernatural.

J cheerfully calls it "Mullet Buffy." Having watched much of the first season in the last few days and easily shouting out which woman (singular) will survive an episode based on clothing coverage, I have made a Supernatural bingo card.

Quite far from the first, I'm sure, but it's surprisingly playable! I am actually playing scrambled arrangements of it for every episode. I... must be pretty bored. I'm enjoying calling out classic horror references, though.

J remarked with surprise when one episode went after a religious arch-conservative who was targeting liberals. I hadn't realized quite how distinctive it was until he pointed that out.

Sam had thrown me off the scent by being the defense of intellectualism, defiance of authoritarian parenting, etc. But he's defending it within the context of totally buying into the Family framework.

Yeah.

Dean's acceptance of the concept of taking "orders" from their dad squicked me out pretty firmly.

Oh fuck, I am discussing Supernatural on the Internet with familiarity.

I will never, ever talk about "shipping" without irony, at least. I reserve the right to make jokes about putting the "bro" in "bromance".

Ahhh, Wincest. My only even dim familiarity with Supernatural before this week was because I read a couple Wincest pieces from authors whose other work I liked. Watching the show now, I really, really don't see it.

My favorite turn on 'shipping' was when White Flag was in the top 40 and certain Harry Potter fans were in conniptions about one of their favorite relationships being TOTALLY INVALIDATED by another relationship forming later. This led to Remus/Sirius "I will go down with this ship" LJ icons.

I don't see it, either, but I know people who watch the show purely for its "romantic tensions." I wonder more than previously what might be off with these people. I only started watching it recently because I figured I should see what all the fuss is about. It sounds like it gets more complex after the first few seasons? So far, mostly yawn, but it's fine background.
