After several attempts to find things Netflix doesn't have (I'll have to look for The 4400 and V separately), and some tasty tasty Futurama, it was J's turn to choose again. His preferred sick-time TV is schlock horror. This week, that's in the form of Supernatural.

J cheerfully calls it "Mullet Buffy." Having watched much of the first season in the last few days and easily shouting out which woman (singular) will survive an episode based on clothing coverage, I have made a Supernatural bingo card.

Quite far from the first, I'm sure, but it's surprisingly playable! I am actually playing scrambled arrangements of it for every episode. I... must be pretty bored. I'm enjoying calling out classic horror references, though.

*Most* clothed girl lives? So it's essentially a morality tale?

Yup. There's been one exception where an actively sexual woman (woman of color, no less) had sex with one of the heroes on-screen and survived. He said he'd keep in touch. We assume this means the writers are saving her for later.

ETA: This is actually a classic horror trope in its own right, called the Last Girl. She's the good girl, preferably a virgin, who traditionally fights off the villain with scissors or something after all the more free-spirited and sexually active females have been picked off.

I loved my horror movie lit crit class.

Mullet Buffy! Thank you. All of my descriptions of it have proceeded from the X-Files rather than Buffy, but the latter really makes more sense. :D

Also "every culture in the world" SO TRUE.

The conservative fandom loves the show, and the actors. Family all the time, men are rugged and only have manly feelings, guns solve any problem.

I've heard good things about Supernatural, but it hasn't ever appealed to me. This game looks fun, but I'm wondering if it would be necessary for me to play in order to enjoy the show.

It's in quotes because you only can tick it off for the actual quote. Same with capital F "Family" as in "I'm doing it because he's Family."

Chick flick moment dodged is not actually a Nookie category item, but a Boys trope for manly men not talking about their manly feelings. (For full points, it really has to be Dean doing the dodging.)

This explains an enormous number of things I didn't previously understand, about a friend who is crazy into SN and her rantings about it.

From what I know of your media tastes, I'm afraid you would need a bingo card. The only living woman we've seen in more than one episode is pure evil. It's wall to wall manly men hurt/comfort. I'm into wall to wall manly hurt/comfort and I'm not finding enough to make me a fan.

J remarked with surprise when one episode went after a religious arch-conservative who was targeting liberals. I hadn't realized quite how distinctive it was until he pointed that out.

Sam had thrown me off the scent by being the defense of intellectualism, defiance of authoritarian parenting, etc. But he's defending it within the context of totally buying into the Family framework.

If you want to try it, this bingo link should work for another month. Switch it to putting any word in any column and they'll shuffle up beautifully.

Yeah.

Dean's acceptance of the concept of taking "orders" from their dad squicked me out pretty firmly.

Oh fuck, I am discussing Supernatural on the Internet with familiarity.

I will never, ever talk about "shipping" without irony, at least. I reserve the right to make jokes about putting the "bro" in "bromance".

Ahhh, Wincest. My only even dim familiarity with Supernatural before this week was because I read a couple Wincest pieces from authors whose other work I liked. Watching the show now, I really, really don't see it.

My favorite turn on 'shipping' was when White Flag was in the top 40 and certain Harry Potter fans were in conniptions about one of their favorite relationships being TOTALLY INVALIDATED by another relationship forming later. This led to Remus/Sirius "I will go down with this ship" LJ icons.

I don't see it, either, but I know people who watch the show purely for its "romantic tensions." I wonder more than previously what might be off with these people. I only started watching it recently because I figured I should see what all the fuss is about. It sounds like it gets more complex after the first few seasons? So far, mostly yawn, but it's fine background.

Not in quotes, but you know what's a great counterpoint to the "every culture in the world" stuff? The whole: X couldn't be here, X is only in Y!

If anyone reading this thread is interested, there's someone over on this ping post who's letting us know that the show becomes dramatically less formulaic after Season 1. She's happy to give key episode guides to help skip past the schlock, if anyone's interested.
