Two Weeks' Notice

I look into the future
and I'm not there.
A sticky note in my handwriting says,
"Call again on 1/9/04."
A month's time.
I'll never see it done;
I must trust to my successor.
I tell myself, "I'm not dying.
It's just a job. I chose this."
I leave my affairs in order.
I bequeath my treasured office supplies.
I wonder who will water the plant.
